Moving to Buda, TX: A Local Family’s Guide

Buda is our hometown. We are a family owned and operated moving company based here, and we have helped a lot of families move into Buda from Austin, San Antonio, and out of state. People come for the small-town feel, the newer homes, and the easy drive to Austin. Here is what we tell friends who are thinking about moving to Buda, from neighborhoods and commutes to what move day looks like.

Where Is Buda?

Buda sits in Hays County along I-35, just south of Austin and just north of Kyle. It is close enough to Austin for a daily commute, but far enough out to feel like its own place. SH 45 connects Buda to MoPac and to southeast Austin, and FM 1626 and FM 967 run west toward the Hill Country.

What Buda Feels Like

Buda has a historic downtown along Main Street with local restaurants, shops, and events through the year. The city is known for its family-friendly festivals, including the long-running country fair with its famous wiener dog races. Parks like Stagecoach Park and the Buda City Park along Onion Creek give families space to get outside, and the hike-and-bike trails keep growing.

Neighborhoods

Buda has a mix of older homes near downtown and newer master-planned communities. Neighborhoods like Sunfield, Garlic Creek, Whispering Hollow, and the communities off FM 1626 and FM 967 are popular with families. Many newer neighborhoods have HOA rules about moving trucks and hours, so ask for those rules before move day.

Schools

Most of Buda is served by Hays CISD. School attendance zones can change as the district grows, so check the district’s website for any specific address you are considering. If you have kids, many families time their move for summer, which is also the busiest time to book movers.

Commuting from Buda

For many residents, the big question is the commute. I-35 is the main route north to Austin, and it gets heavy at rush hour. SH 45 and MoPac offer an alternative for people heading to Southwest and Central Austin. Kyle, San Marcos, and South Austin are all a short drive. Try your commute at rush hour before you sign a lease or buy a home.

Things to Know Before Move Day

  • HOA rules: Many Buda neighborhoods limit where trucks can park and what hours moves can happen.
  • New construction: If your home is brand new, there may be builders and unfinished streets nearby. Confirm access before move day.
  • Heat: Summer moves go better with an early start.
  • Traffic: If you are moving from Austin, avoid peak I-35 hours if you can.
  • Utilities: Set up electricity, water, internet, and trash service before you arrive. Check with the city and your provider for your address.

Moving to Buda from Out of State

If you are coming to Buda from another state, plan the delivery side carefully. Have a clear address, access instructions, and a list of which rooms get which boxes. Label boxes by room so unloading goes quickly. We can help with the Texas side of a long-distance move; see our long distance moving page.

Your First Week in Buda

  1. Unpack the kitchen, the beds, and the bathroom first.
  2. Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration if you are new to Texas.
  3. Register to vote at your new address.
  4. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, and urgent care.
  5. Take a walk through downtown Buda and Stagecoach Park.
  6. Meet your neighbors. Buda is friendly.

What Affects the Cost of Moving to Buda

We do not publish prices, because every move is different. For a local move into or within Buda, your total depends on a few things you can control and a few you cannot: how much you are moving, the size of the crew, stairs and the walk from the truck to the door at both homes, and whether you want packing. Local moves are priced by the hour based on crew size, with no truck fees, and travel time is listed separately on your quote. Being packed and ready, with a clear path and a spot for the truck, is the easiest way to keep a move efficient. For a deeper look, read How Much Do Movers Cost in Austin and San Antonio?

Packing Tips for a Buda Move

  • Pack heavy items like books in small boxes and light items in larger ones.
  • Label each box with its room in your new Buda home, on the side and the top.
  • Keep a cooler with water and snacks for move day; summer afternoons are hot.
  • Set aside an open-first box with bedding, chargers, toiletries, and medications.
