Piano Movers in Austin

Piano Movers in Austin & Central Texas

A piano is heavy, but that’s only part of the challenge. It’s also delicate, top-heavy, oddly shaped, and often the most meaningful piece of furniture in the house. Maybe it’s the upright your kids learned on, or the baby grand that’s been in the family for generations. Elite Star Movers is a family owned and operated moving company based in Buda, and we move pianos across Austin, Buda, Kyle, San Antonio, and the rest of Central Texas, as well as on long-distance and out-of-state moves.

We’re state-licensed (TXDMV #007098595c), insured, BBB-registered, and HomeAdvisor-screened, with more than 10 years of moving experience. Our owner works in the field with our crews. Quality Service Guaranteed.

Why Piano Moves Need a Plan

Most piano damage happens in the first and last few feet of the move: on porch steps, around tight corners, over thresholds, and while lifting it in or out of the truck. A piano carries most of its weight in its iron plate and frame, so it doesn’t balance like a dresser or a refrigerator. Tipping it the wrong way can hurt the instrument, the floor, and the people moving it.

That’s why we plan the path before anything moves. We look at doorways, stairs, turns, flooring, and where the truck can park, then decide how many movers the job needs and how the piano will travel.

Upright, Grand, and Baby Grand Pianos

Upright pianos

Uprights, including spinets, consoles, and taller studio and full-size uprights, move standing up. We wrap the whole piano in heavy moving pads, secure the pads with straps, and move it on a dolly, keeping it upright and steady. Taller uprights carry their weight high, so we keep enough hands on the piano at every step.

Grand and baby grand pianos

Grand pianos take more preparation. In general, the lid is secured, the legs and pedal assembly are carefully removed and padded, and the body of the piano is wrapped in pads and strapped so it can be moved safely on its side. At your new home, we reverse the process and set the piano back up in the spot you choose.

Digital pianos and organs

Digital pianos are lighter, but they still need careful wrapping to protect the finish, keys, and electronics. Let us know about organs or other large instruments when you request your quote.

Stairs, Tight Spaces, and Hill Country Homes

Central Texas homes come in every shape. Two-story houses in Circle C and Round Rock, second-floor apartments in Kyle and San Marcos, older homes in Hyde Park and Monte Vista with narrow doorways, and Hill Country homes in Dripping Springs and Wimberley with steep drives and long walkways. Each brings its own piano-moving challenges.

When you request a quote, tell us about stairs, landings, tight turns, and how far the piano is from the door. Photos help a lot. If the move involves stairs, we plan the number of crew members and the route ahead of time so the piano moves slowly and under control.

How We Protect Your Piano and Your Home

  • Heavy moving pads wrapped around the whole piano to protect the finish.
  • Straps to hold the pads in place and keep the piano secure in the truck.
  • Dollies to roll the piano smoothly instead of dragging or carrying it farther than needed.
  • Floor and doorway protection along the path through your home.
  • Careful, experienced crews who communicate at every step, especially on stairs and turns.

Local Piano Moves Around Austin

We move pianos room to room, across town, and between cities throughout Central Texas, including Austin, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Dripping Springs, Wimberley, New Braunfels, and San Antonio. We can move a piano on its own or as part of a full household move.

Long-Distance and Out-of-State Piano Moves

Moving a piano across Texas or to another state takes the same care plus a few extra steps. The piano is fully padded and strapped in the truck so it stays put for the whole trip, and we plan the unloading at your new home just as carefully as the loading. Long-distance moves come with our flat-rate price guarantee, with the details confirmed in your written quote.

We move pianos as part of moves from Austin to Denver, Phoenix, Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Houston, and other cities. See our long distance moving page, or read our guide on how to move a piano long distance.

How to Prepare Your Piano for Moving Day

  • Clear the path. Move rugs, small furniture, and decor out of the way between the piano and the door.
  • Empty the bench. Pack sheet music and books separately.
  • Close and lock the lid if your piano has a lock, and keep the key with you.
  • Remove photos and decor from the top of the piano.
  • Measure the new space. Make sure the piano will fit where you want it, away from direct sun, vents, and exterior doors.
  • Plan a tuning. Pianos often drift out of tune after a move and a change in temperature and humidity. Many technicians suggest letting the piano settle in its new home for a couple of weeks before tuning.

Piano Moving FAQs

Do you move grand pianos?

Yes. We move grand and baby grand pianos as well as uprights, spinets, and consoles, locally and long distance.

Can you move a piano up or down stairs?

Yes, in most cases. Tell us about the stairs when you request a quote, and send photos if you can, so we can plan the crew size and route.

Can you move just a piano, without the rest of the house?

Yes. We move pianos on their own, room to room or across town, as well as part of a full move.

How much does it cost to move a piano?

It depends on the type and size of the piano, stairs and access at both locations, and distance. Call us or submit your details online for an estimate.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?
