Furniture Pad and Wrap Guide: How Our Movers Protect Your Furniture
Howdy! 🤠If you have ever wondered how movers keep a dining table, dresser, or TV looking the same at the new house as it did at the old one, the answer is padding and wrapping. Elite Star Movers is a family owned and operated moving company in Buda, TX, and we pad and wrap furniture on moves across Austin, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, New Braunfels, San Antonio, and Central Texas. This guide walks through how we do it, what you can do before move day, and what our crew handles once we arrive. It is the heart of our motto: Serving People & Protecting Furniture, Peace by Piece.
What “Pad and Wrap” Means
Pad and wrap is the way professional movers protect furniture that does not go in a box. Each piece is covered in thick moving pads (also called moving blankets), and the pads are held in place with stretch wrap. The pad absorbs bumps and keeps scratches off the finish. The wrap keeps the pad snug so it does not slip off while the piece is carried, loaded, and unloaded.
Done right, furniture padding and wrapping protects against the most common moving damage:
- Scratches and scuffs on wood, metal, and painted finishes
- Dented or chipped corners and edges
- Dust and dirt in fabric and upholstery
- Drawers and doors swinging open while a piece is carried
The Materials Our Crew Uses
Moving pads (moving blankets)
Thick, quilted pads are the main layer of protection. They cushion the piece and cover every surface that could touch a wall, a door frame, or another piece during loading.
Stretch wrap
Stretch wrap (shrink wrap) goes over the pads to hold them tight. On upholstered pieces like sofas and chairs, wrap also helps keep dust and dirt off the fabric.
Mattress bags
Mattresses and box springs go into mattress bags so they stay clean and dry from the bedroom to the new bedroom.
Wardrobe boxes
Hanging clothes can move in wardrobe boxes, so they go straight from your closet to the new closet on the hanger.
Floor runners and door-jamb pads
Protecting furniture also means protecting your home. Before we carry anything out, our crew lays floor runners along the main path and pads door jambs, so the floors and frames stay clean and free of scuffs.
How We Pad and Wrap Furniture, Step by Step
- Walk through first. Hector Jr leads the crew, and the move starts with a quick walk-through so everyone knows which pieces need extra care and which way they will go out the door.
- Protect the path. Floor runners and door-jamb pads go down before the first piece is carried.
- Empty and secure. Drawers and doors are checked so nothing slides open on the stairs.
- Take apart what comes apart. Beds, tables, desks, and other furniture that comes apart are disassembled so they carry safely and fit through doors. Hardware is kept together so reassembly goes smoothly.
- Pad every surface. Pads go on so corners, edges, legs, and tops are covered.
- Wrap to hold. Stretch wrap goes over the pads to keep them snug through carrying and loading.
- Load with care. Padded pieces are loaded and secured so they do not rub against each other on the road.
- Unwrap and set up. At your new home, we unwrap, reassemble what we took apart, and place each piece where you want it.
Padded or Boxed? How We Decide
Not everything gets the same treatment. Here is a simple way to think about it:
| Usually padded and wrapped | Usually boxed |
|---|---|
| Dressers, nightstands, and chests | Dishes, glasses, and kitchenware |
| Dining tables and chairs | Books, files, and paperwork |
| Sofas, sectionals, and recliners | Decor, small lamps, and knickknacks |
| Desks, bookcases, and entertainment centers | Clothes that do not hang |
| Headboards, bed frames, and rails | Toys, linens, and bathroom items |
| Large appliances | Small electronics and cords |
TVs, mirrors, glass, and framed art
Flat, fragile pieces like TVs, mirrors, glass tabletops, and framed art get extra padding so the corners and glass are covered. When a piece needs a custom crate, we can arrange crating through a trusted partner. If you want these items packed for you, see our packing services.
Pianos
A piano needs more than a pad. See our piano movers page for how we handle pianos.
What You Can Do Before Move Day
A few small steps make padding and wrapping faster and safer:
- Empty drawers and cabinets in dressers, desks, and hutches, or ask us what can stay in.
- Remove loose parts like glass shelves, knobs that come off easily, and lamp shades, and pack them separately.
- Point out special pieces like heirlooms, antiques, or anything with a delicate finish, so the crew knows ahead of time.
- Clear the path from each room to the door, and let us know about stairs, tight turns, or a long walk.
- Unplug and clear electronics. Back up computers and coil cords so TVs and equipment are ready to pad.
- Set aside what rides with you, like valuables, medications, important papers, and things you need the first night.

What Our Crew Does on Move Day
On move day, you do not need to supply pads or wrap. Our crew brings the moving pads, stretch wrap, mattress bags, floor runners, and door-jamb pads with them. Hector Jr leads the crew, protects your home first, pads and wraps each piece, loads everything with care, and sets it all back up at the other end. That is what we mean by We Can Handle It.
